Freespirit Recreation Aspen Lite Standard vs Gordigear Bonito

The Freespirit Recreation Aspen Lite Standard and the Gordigear Bonito are both hybrid tents in the same part of the market, which makes them a genuine head-to-head rather than a comparison across categories. Freespirit Recreation and Gordigear take noticeably different approaches to the same problem.

The Aspen Lite Standard is 52.6 kg lighter at 45.4 kg against 98 kg, which on a factory roof rated for 68 to 75 kg is often the difference between a legal fit and a rack upgrade. Inside, the Bonito gives 3.27 m² of sleeping floor against 2.23 m², about 47 percent more, and it sleeps 3 to the Aspen Lite Standard's 2. Headroom separates them further: 149.9 cm in the Aspen Lite Standard against 95 cm, which is the difference between sitting up to dress and doing it lying down. The Aspen Lite Standard lists $763 lower, at $2,250 against $3,013.

They open differently: the Aspen Lite Standard is a clamshell and the Bonito a pop-up. That is not cosmetic — it decides whether headroom is even across the tent or tapers towards one end, and how much of the roof the tent occupies when closed. The Aspen Lite Standard uses extruded aluminum frame with polymer corners; tonneau-style hybrid top; the Bonito uses aluminium 18 mm honeycomb core with aluminium planking. Canvas differs too: tri-Layer: polycotton fill between two layers of 210D ripstop against 320 gr/m2 ripstop polyester-cotton blend, polyurethane impregnated and UV resistant. Closed, the Aspen Lite Standard sits 9.3 cm lower on the roof — 18.7 cm against 28 cm — which is drag you carry on every mile you are not camping.

Freespirit Recreation

Aspen Lite Standard

The Aspen Lite Standard is the smaller of Freespirit Recreation's two Aspen Lite clamshell tents, using a lightweight tonneau-style hybrid top over an extruded-aluminum frame. It sleeps 1-2 and, at 100 lbs on the spec sheet, is the lightest tent in the current Aspen range. It carries the same Tri-Layer tent fabric, dimmable LED strip and heater/AC/electrical ports as the rest of the lineup.

  • Low listed weight (100 lbs) for a clamshell tent
  • Integrated dimmable LED lighting and heater/AC/electrical ports
  • Includes mattress, ladder, cover and gear storage grid
  • Manufacturer publishes conflicting weight figures (100 vs 110 lbs)

Gordigear

Bonito

The Bonito is a hybrid aluminium hard-shell tent for 2-3 people, built with a compact footprint aimed at pick-up truck cargo areas. It opens semi-automatically in about 30 seconds to erected dimensions of 215 x 152 cm with a 210 x 140 cm sleeping surface and a 50 mm memory-foam mattress. It is the heaviest of Gordigear's hard shells at a published 98 kg.

  • Compact 152 x 133 cm packed footprint suited to pick-up beds
  • Dimmable 2-colour LED lighting and heater-port preparation
  • Stated 5000 mm tent / 3000 mm flysheet water columns
  • Heaviest Gordigear hard shell at 98 kg

Which one to pick

Take the Aspen Lite Standard if your roof load limit is the binding constraint. Take the Bonito if you need the sleeping room more than you need the lighter tent. Beyond that the feature rows below — heater port, skylight, annex, cargo rails — are where the remaining difference lies.
