Dynamic versus static, and why it matters
A roof that will hold 700 kg parked may be rated for only 68 kg on the move. The difference is not conservatism: at speed, every bump and corner multiplies the load on four small mounting points, and a heavy mass that high also raises the centre of gravity enough to change how the vehicle behaves in an emergency swerve.
This is why the dynamic figure is the one that decides which tents you can actually buy. It is also why the rack counts: a full-length platform can eat half a mid-size SUV's allowance before the tent is bolted on. And because makers differ in what their published weight covers — some exclude the ladder, some the mattress, some do not say — the totals here show that figure as published, with a note on what it includes, rather than padding it with a guess.
