How much rooftop tent weight your roof can actually take
More rooftop tent purchases go wrong here than anywhere else, and it is almost always the same three mistakes: reading the static limit instead of the dynamic one, forgetting the rack, and trusting a published tent weight that excludes the ladder.
Dynamic is the number that matters
Your vehicle has two roof ratings. The static limit is what the roof holds parked — often several hundred kilograms, which is why you can sleep up there. The dynamic limit is what it holds while moving, and it is typically a fraction of that: 54 kg on a Tacoma's factory carrier, around 68 kg on a Wrangler or Bronco, 100 kg on a current Defender or Land Cruiser 300.
The dynamic figure is lower because motion multiplies force. Every pothole and every corner loads four small mounting points far beyond the tent's standing weight, and a heavy mass that high changes how the vehicle responds to an emergency swerve. It is the dynamic number that decides which tents you can buy.
The rack is part of the load
The rack sits between the tent and the roof, so its mass counts against the same limit. Crossbars add roughly 8 kg. A full-length platform rack can add 35 kg or more.
On a 68 kg dynamic limit, a 35 kg platform leaves just 33 kg for the tent — and only the very lightest tents here, like the 33 kg TentBox GO, squeeze under that; step up to anything roomier and the rack has already spent your budget. Crossbars on the same vehicle add roughly 8 kg and leave about 60 kg, which opens up most of the softshell range.
Published weights are often incomplete
Alu-Cab quotes the Gen 3-R at 76 kg and states plainly that this excludes the mattress and ladder; with them it is 87 kg. iKamper lists the ladder and mattress as separate line items on the Skycamp 4.0 pages. Several brands do not say either way.
The practical rule: add 10 kg to any published figure unless the manufacturer explicitly says the ladder and mattress are included, and treat any tent within 10 kg of your limit as being over it.
What to do if you are over
The usual fix is not a lighter tent, it is a different mounting point. A bed rack on a pickup, or a platform tied into the vehicle's structure rather than the roof skin, moves the load off the roof rating entirely — which is why Tacoma owners fit tents far heavier than the 54 kg factory carrier figure would suggest.
What is not a fix is assuming the rack's own rating overrides the vehicle's. An aftermarket platform rated for 100 kg dynamic on an 80 kg vehicle does not give you 100 kg. The lower of the two always governs.
