Ironman 4x4 Orion 1200 Lightweight vs RoofBunk Roamer

The Ironman 4x4 Orion 1200 Lightweight and the RoofBunk Roamer are both hardshell tents in the same part of the market, which makes them a genuine head-to-head rather than a comparison across categories. Ironman 4x4 and RoofBunk take noticeably different approaches to the same problem.

The Roamer is 11.5 kg lighter at 60 kg against 71.5 kg, which on a factory roof rated for 68 to 75 kg is often the difference between a legal fit and a rack upgrade. Floor area is close to identical at 2.75 m² and 2.94 m², so neither wins on sleeping room. Headroom separates them further: 156 cm in the Orion 1200 Lightweight against 100 cm, which is the difference between sitting up to dress and doing it lying down. The Roamer lists $241 lower, at $2,258 against $2,499. Ironman 4x4 also backs the Orion 1200 Lightweight for 3 years against 2.

They open differently: the Orion 1200 Lightweight is a clamshell and the Roamer a pop-up. That is not cosmetic — it decides whether headroom is even across the tent or tapers towards one end, and how much of the roof the tent occupies when closed. The Orion 1200 Lightweight uses pressed-aluminium hardshell with aluminium honeycomb base; the Roamer uses high-quality ABS. Canvas differs too: 280gsm ripstop polycotton fly with blackout coating; 120gsm super-fine insect mesh against 320gsm poly-cotton blend ripstop canvas. Closed, the Orion 1200 Lightweight sits 12.5 cm lower on the roof — 14.5 cm against 27 cm — which is drag you carry on every mile you are not camping.

Ironman 4x4

Orion 1200 Lightweight

The Orion 1200 Lightweight is a two-person gas-strut hardshell tent with a pressed-aluminium shell over an aluminium honeycomb base, catalogued by Ironman 4x4 USA at $2,499 (sold out at time of check). It keeps the same 2200 x 1250 mm footprint open as packed and stands 1560 mm high inside, on a 40 mm high-density foam mattress with a separate 10 mm anti-condensation mat. The maker publishes a 71.5 kg tent weight and rates the roof plates to 40 kg closed / 15 kg open for accessories.

  • Lower published weight (71.5 kg) than the brand's Orion 1400 and Ursa hardshells
  • Gas-strut clamshell opening the maker rates at under 3 minutes
  • Blackout-coated 280gsm ripstop polycotton with a heater/cooler hose inlet
  • Sold out on Ironman 4x4's US site at time of check

RoofBunk

Roamer

The Roamer is RoofBunk's ABS hard-shell tent, a gas-strut pop-up that the maker says opens in 30-60 seconds and sleeps 2-3. RoofBunk lists open dimensions of 210 x 140cm, a closed height of 27cm, a 7cm memory-foam mattress and a 60kg weight excluding the ladder. The high-quality ABS shell tops a 320gsm poly-cotton ripstop canvas body rated to 3000mm HH and 4-season.

  • Quick 30-60 second gas-strut pop-up setup per the manufacturer
  • Thicker 7cm memory-foam mattress than the soft-shell Explorer range
  • Bedding can be left inside when the ABS shell is closed
  • Weight (60kg) is published excluding the ladder

Which one to pick

Take the Roamer if your roof load limit is the binding constraint. Beyond that the feature rows below — heater port, skylight, annex, cargo rails — are where the remaining difference lies.
