Direct4x4 ClamTrekk vs Horntools Cloud 140
The Direct4x4 ClamTrekk and the Horntools Cloud 140 are both hardshell tents in the same part of the market, which makes them a genuine head-to-head rather than a comparison across categories. Direct4x4 and Horntools take noticeably different approaches to the same problem.
By the numbers, the Direct4x4 ClamTrekk brings 76 kg and sleeps 2. The Horntools Cloud 140 counters with 60 kg, 3.18 m² of floor, 122 cm of headroom and sleeps 2.
The Cloud 140 is 16 kg lighter at 60 kg against 76 kg, which on a factory roof rated for 68 to 75 kg is often the difference between a legal fit and a rack upgrade. Their list prices are within a few percent of each other, so price is unlikely to decide this one.
The ClamTrekk uses honeycomb aluminium; the Cloud 140 uses PVC (matte black), aluminium frame. Canvas differs too: 65% polyester / 35% cotton, mould-proof, water resistant 10,000 mm against 300 g/m2 sailcloth with PU coating; 65% polyester, 35% cotton (water column 2000 mm); canopy 210D Oxford with PU coating (3000 mm). Closed, the Cloud 140 sits 7.5 cm lower on the roof — 12.5 cm against 20 cm — which is drag you carry on every mile you are not camping.
Direct4x4

It ships with a telescopic ladder, two door poles, a camping light with 12V internal sockets, an anti-condensation mat, boot bags and two roof-rack bars.
- Honeycomb aluminium shell opens quickly on gas struts
- Ships with ladder, camping light, 12V sockets and two roof-rack bars
- Fabric rated to a 10,000 mm water column

Horntools
Cloud 140
The Cloud is Horntools's ultra-flat triangular (wedge) roof tent for two, opening on gas springs to a peak interior height of 122 cm. It uses a matte-black PVC top shell over an aluminium frame and packs down to just 12.5 cm closed, with a 7 cm foam mattress and integrated three-mode LED lighting. Setup is quoted at under three minutes.
- Very low 12.5 cm packed height
- Gas-spring wedge opens in under three minutes
- Integrated three-mode LED lighting
- Wedge shape means interior height drops toward the foot end (min 23 cm)
Which one to pick
Take the Cloud 140 if your roof load limit is the binding constraint. Beyond that the feature rows below — heater port, skylight, annex, cargo rails — are where the remaining difference lies.
